Recommended Apps

Below are the apps I most commonly use with students. These all cost a small amount to purchase, but they are definitely worth it!

Note Rush: Learn to Read Music

Note Rush is a fun and effective game for practicing note reading on the music staff to help you learn to play the piano, keyboard, flute, saxophone, violin... you name it! Note Rush shows you one note at a time in random order then uses the microphone to listen as you play through them like you would with note reading flash cards, only these flash cards check that you're playing the right note! Available for Android and Apple devices.

Rhythm Swing

A fun and educational app for iPad and iPhone. Kids learn about rhythm and how it is written with music notation. Can you save the monkey from the crocodile?

Flashnote Derby

Flashnote Derby takes the drudgery out of memorizing the notes of the music staff and turns it into a fun and challenging game. Simply select the notes you wish to practice, and it’s off to the races. Available for Apple and Android devices.

More fun (and useful) music apps

The Piano

This Apple app gives you access to a piano keyboard on the go, or for emergency practice sessions when you just can't get to a piano. No need to pay, the free version is fine.

MuseScore

An excellent open-source library of sheet music. Once you know how to read the notes, you can find music here from just about any genre and new music is added every day. No need to pay for a premium subscription (unless you want to start writing and sharing your own scores!).

The Most Amazing Sheep Game

You need to really feel the beat to be good at this game - not something that comes naturally to everyone! It might just seem like a sheep-jumpingly good time, but there's learning here I promise!
